Chapter one, in which an idea becomes a book

Every book begins as a single sentence.

Write yours. IdeaTome plans it, shows you the summary, writes chapter one for your approval, then the rest — and sets the whole thing in type as PDF, EPUB and Word, with print-ready interiors for Amazon KDP.

The idea

A calm guide for people who start more projects than they finish

How it works

The making of a book, in five parts.

The same stages every published book goes through — idea, plan, draft, cover, typesetting — done in minutes instead of months, with you deciding at each one.

  1. I

    The idea

One sentence is enough. Pick one of seven formats, a length — from a short guide to a thousand-page epic — a page size and a language. Books are priced by length, and every price is shown before a word is written.

  2. II

    The summary

A title, a one-page synopsis and a chapter plan sized to the length you chose. Read it first. Want the villain older, a chapter on pricing, a darker ending? Say so in plain English and the plan is rewritten — earlier versions are kept.

  3. III

    The chapters

Chapter one first, and an email when it is ready — judge the voice before anything else is spent. Then the rest, or one chapter at a time. A running summary travels from chapter to chapter, so the hundredth still remembers the second.

  4. IV

    The design

Over 500 book designs across 35 genres — dark romance to cookbooks — each a matched cover and interior: typefaces, chapter openings, ornaments, colours. Customise any of it, drag the type on the cover, add your own images or an AI illustration.

  5. V

    The finished files

The manuscript is set in type: a reading PDF, a print interior for Amazon KDP, an EPUB for e-readers and an editable Word file. Download them whenever you like.

A fair question

Why not just ask ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?

They are brilliant writers. They are not publishers. A chat window gives you text, a reply at a time; a book needs a plan, a memory that spans every chapter, a cover, and pages set in type. That is the part IdeaTome does.

Keep using them to brainstorm — we do. Come here when you want the book.

Memory across the whole book
A general AI chat: The conversation drifts. By chapter twelve, names, promises and facts from chapter two start to slip, and you paste reminders back in by hand.
IdeaTome: A running summary of the book so far travels with every chapter, so the last one still honours the first.
Structure
A general AI chat: You design the outline, decide chapter lengths and keep asking for “the next one”.
IdeaTome: A summary and plan you approve first, sized to the length you choose — up to a thousand pages — and each format written to its own editorial brief.
Effort
A general AI chat: Dozens of prompts, copy, paste, reformat, repeat.
IdeaTome: One sentence, then a yes or a plain-English change at each step. We email you when each part is ready.
The files
A general AI chat: Text in a chat window. Making it a book is still your job.
IdeaTome: Typeset PDF, a KDP print interior (right-hand chapter openings, real page numbers, mirrored margins), EPUB and Word.
Cover and coloring pages
A general AI chat: A separate tool, a separate prompt, and no idea of your trim size.
IdeaTome: A cover made for your title, and coloring pages checked to be colorable and laid out at 8.5 × 11 in with bleed.
Your library
A general AI chat: Somewhere in your chat history.
IdeaTome: Every book kept, re-downloadable, any chapter changeable in plain English, the price shown before you pay it — and every book its own, checked against every other.

The Velvet Reliquary of Saint Vey

by Avnish Rai

“The kingdom’s peace is bought with grief—and a knight’s shame.”

Sir Corin Vale once served at the queen’s right hand. Now, stripped of rank after the massacre at Bellwether, he is chained beneath Veyr Palace to guard the sealed tomb of Saint Vey—the sleeping protector said to shield Rookmere from plague, famine, and invasion. When a dying clerk leaves Corin a ledger of royal disasters measured in “velvet weight,” he finds evidence that the kingdom’s misery has been carefully made. Crop blights, conscriptions, border raids, and orphan houses all feed a hidden ritual beneath the throne. Saint Vey’s protection depends on grief, and Queen Aveline Orsini has spent years ensuring there is enough of it. With a smuggler whose son vanished into the palace system, a mortician-priest losing faith, and the queen’s own minister of solace closing in, Corin must confront the people he betrayed and decide what Rookmere is worth without its god.

Romance

The Blue Wren Bakehouse

by Avnish Rai

“She came home to sell the past—then found it still mattered.”

Mara Venn left Cinderwake at eighteen and made herself indispensable in Paris, where butter, sugar and precision can be shaped into a future no one can dismiss. Then her father dies, leaving her a crumbling Cornish bakehouse—and six weeks to keep it open before she can sell. The Blue Wren sits at the centre of a harbour a developer wants to remake. So does Callum Rook, now Cinderwake’s harbourmaster and the boy Mara once planned to leave with. He is engaged to Tessa Vale, Mara’s former best friend, and none of them can afford the comfort of old assumptions. As saffron buns draw the village back through the bakehouse door, hidden letters expose why Mara fled, and a storm reveals what the proposed marina could destroy. Mara must decide whether Paris is the life she chose—or the place she learned to hide.

Psychological thriller

The Chain at Blackwall Steps

by Avnish Rai

“Her patient remembers the night her husband vanished.”

Ten years after her husband disappeared beside the Thames, Dr. Claire Whitmore has made a life from what the police could not explain: Lucas’s coat, a broken watch, blood on a mooring chain—and no body. Then Noah Vale enters her east London consulting room. He suffers panic attacks and intrusive memories, but the details he gives Claire belong to the night at Blackwall Steps: rain on her sleeve, a boat radio, the torn green lining of Lucas’s coat. Details no stranger should know. As Noah’s story draws Claire back to the river, she uncovers Lucas’s connection to a sham guardianship charity and a girl who vanished that same night. But Noah is hiding his name, Claire cannot trust her own fractured memory, and the man she mourned may have used her silence as his protection. To find the truth, Claire must face what happened at Blackwall—and what Lucas made her believe about herself.

Horror

The Empty Chair at Cwmbrin

by Avnish Rai

“On Cwmbrin, every family saves a seat for the dead.”

Six months after his wife’s death, Gareth Pryce takes his children to Cwmbrin, a remote Welsh island and the inherited cottage of an aunt he barely knew. He wants a temporary refuge from Cardiff—and from the memories that make home unbearable. But on Cwmbrin, every meal includes a fourth place: a clean plate, a cup of water and an empty chair. No one will say who it is for. As Nia hears Helen humming outside the house and eight-year-old Tom discovers a hatch beneath the pantry, Gareth learns that the island has long fed its grief through a ritual for the unnamed dead. His aunt tried to break that ritual to reclaim the son she lost at sea. Now something inside Bryn Ffynnon offers Gareth the one thing he cannot stop wanting: Helen returned. The price is one of his living children.

Dark romance

The Indigo Room at Widow's Cape

by Mara Vey

“Some houses hide the truth. Some choose who keeps it.”

When true-crime podcaster Wren Castellane inherits her grandmother’s collapsing cottage on the Oregon coast, she plans to finish a book about Widow’s Cape’s unsolved 1987 disappearances. Instead, the house begins speaking in gifts and warnings: a pressed foxglove on her pillow, a cassette of her sleeping voice, and a key to a hidden indigo room sealed inside the walls. What Wren finds there suggests her grandmother was never just a witness to the town’s oldest crime. Silas Vane, the reclusive locksmith watching from the edges of town, believes the killer never left. He also believes Wren is in danger. His protection is invasive, frightening, and hard to refuse. As Wren and Silas close in on the truth through hidden passages, false graves, and decades of protective lies, desire tangles with suspicion. To survive, Wren must decide whether Silas is the threat at her door—or the only man willing to break every boundary to keep her alive.

Romance

Across the Blue Tarpaulin

by Anaya Kapoor

“On a rain-soaked Mumbai road, rivalry starts to taste like love.”

Across Chapel Road in Bandra, two kitchens face off all monsoon long. Kavya Naik runs Aaji’s Handi, a small coastal-Konkan restaurant built on her grandmother’s recipes, stubborn standards, and neighbourhood loyalty. Then Rohan Malkani opens Copper Tide opposite her door: glossy, famous, and full of polished reinventions of dishes Kavya believes should be left alone. Their feud becomes local entertainment—until a streaming producer pairs them for Rain Table, a televised cooking competition that forces them to share burners, ingredients, and camera time through a season of live monsoon challenges. As missing ingredients, switched labels, vanished reservations, and badly timed critics start hitting both restaurants, blame comes easily. Trust does not. With Kavya’s watchful grandmother guarding old wounds as fiercely as old recipes, the contest becomes about more than ratings. To win, Kavya and Rohan must decide whether memory and innovation can belong on the same plate—and whether love can survive two kitchens on opposite sides of the same flooded road.

Epic fantasy

Salt in the Fireblood

by Idris Calloway

“A dead dragon leaves a throne with no right to stand.”

When Cindermaw, the last dragon of House Ashvane, is found dead in the ash-vaults beneath Merrowfast, the Ember Throne loses the sacred proof that held a dynasty together for two centuries. Great houses begin to count troops. The Lantern Synod declares providence. And far from court, Seren Vale — the king’s disgraced bastard daughter — still hides the stone egg she stole on the night she was cast out. Seren returns to a capital that sees her as scandal, leverage and threat. Prince Elian must defend a crown stripped of certainty. Lord Tairn Osswick moves to seize power through marriage, contracts and massacre. Synod examiner Matwyk Rusk means to turn dragon-death into holy revolution. At the center lies a buried truth: the stolen egg answers not to the lawful royal line, but to blood deliberately cut out of succession. To hatch a dragon, Seren must expose the lie that founded the realm and decide whether the old order deserves to survive at all.

Magical world

The Bell Under the Cloud

by Tessa Wren

“At a school built on lies, her hearing becomes a threat.”

Fifteen-year-old Pia Okafor has spent her life in a fishing village that fears the sound she hears inside every lie. When a silver-blue letter summons her to Lanternfall, an academy suspended from a migrating cloud above the western sea, she learns her gift is not a curse at all, but a rare form of magic the school once studied and then erased. Lanternfall offers marvels Pia has never imagined: bottled dawn in classroom glass, skybridges over open sea, and a library that remakes itself after midnight. It also offers danger. The headmistress’s kindness rings false in Pia’s ears. Her lessons leave no place for her talent. And buried in hidden archives and old robe linings is the truth about resonancy, bellcraft, and the students written out of the school’s history. To protect her friends and stop Lanternfall from becoming a tomb in the sky, Pia must speak aloud what an entire institution was built to bury.

Science fiction

Bramble at the Chart Edge

by Rhea Solano

“Debt bought the ship. First contact may cost their freedom.”

The Kestrel Dawn makes its living stripping value from wrecks other crews leave behind. Captain Juno Aris and her five-person salvage crew are held together by old favors, thin fuel margins, and the debt contract that lets a corporation claim whatever future they manage to build. When a centuries-old distress signal pulls them beyond the last insured route, they gamble on one last score big enough to buy their lives back. What they find is Bramble Quarry: a derelict station wrapped in metallic growths, broadcasting proof of a civilisation no human record admits existed. Then the station begins speaking to Juno in the voice of her dead brother. Selling the discovery could free the crew on paper. Protecting it could make them fugitives. As corporate recovery ships close in and the station starts to fail, Juno must decide what first contact means when the system around her only understands ownership.

Cozy mystery

The Velvet Crescent Bookshop

by Leela D’Souza

“In a rain-soaked Goa bookshop, every clue has a history.”

Anjali Viegas keeps her Panjim bookshop alive with tea, stubbornness and a talent for making peace with leaks. But when Basilio Dias, the town’s most disliked antiques dealer, is found dead in her reading nook clutching a first edition she has never seen before, The Velvet Crescent becomes a crime scene and Anjali becomes the obvious suspect. Refusing to let gossip and police suspicion decide her future, Anjali starts asking questions with help from her retired-inspector aunt, Lourdes, and Rui Carvalho, a charming journalist who knows more than he first admits. Their search moves through Fontainhas lanes, Mapusa market, chapel storerooms and the back rooms of the antiques trade, where forged stories can be as valuable as old objects. To clear her name, Anjali must untangle a murder tied to a hidden record, a long-buried theft and the dangerous overlap between family loyalty, money and memory.

Psychological thriller

The Other Nursery on Topaz Court

by Jonah Pierce

“On Topaz Court, grief is the first thing they use against her.”

Three months after a brutal miscarriage, Claire Winter moves with her husband to Topaz Court, a spotless cul-de-sac where every house faces inward and every neighbour seems ready to help. Eva and Nico Bell next door arrive with pastries, smiles—and an attention that soon feels far too precise. Eva wears Claire’s unusual cardigan. She repeats private jokes. Her home begins to fill with Claire’s colours, furniture choices and favourite things. Ash says grief is making Claire see patterns where none exist. Then Eva announces a pregnancy due the same week Claire’s baby should have been born. Claire starts collecting proof: a scan picture, a clinic slip, Ash’s missing afternoons, a locked folder marked with Eva’s name. But as her neighbours and husband close ranks, Claire must determine whether she is being watched, copied and manipulated—or whether loss has made her an unreliable witness to her own life.

Horror

The Hearth at Bhalu Ridge

by Vikram Rathore

“Some houses keep the dead. This one keeps their names.”

Widowed architect Ira Mehta has one winter to turn a decaying colonial sanatorium above Shimla into an intimate hotel. With her twelve-year-old son, Dev, and seven-year-old Tara, she moves into Bhalu Ridge hoping cold mountain air and hard work might quiet the grief she cannot face. Then Tara begins playing with a girl named Elsi. An iron clock strikes hours it does not own. Names from 1911 appear overnight in the guest register, and snow closes the road far longer than it should. Beneath fresh paint and restored paneling, Ira finds signs of a hidden children’s ward, a fire misreported as an accident, and a doctor’s records built to erase the truth. As the house draws her children deeper into its unfinished past, Ira must decide whether she is restoring a building—or helping it bury its dead once more.

Coloring books

Pages worth putting crayons to.

  • Four styles: kawaii, line art, mandala, storybook
  • Thick outlines for kids, fine detail for adults
  • 12, 24 or 36 pages in a book

Appendix

Questions, answered plainly.

Something else on your mind? Write to support@ideatome.com — a person reads every message.

A.1Who owns the book I make?

You do. IdeaTome claims no ownership of your ideas or of the books generated for you, and we never use your books to train AI models. The text is written through the OpenAI API, whose data is not used for model training by default.

A.2Why not just use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?

They are excellent writers, but a chat window gives you text one reply at a time. IdeaTome plans the whole book first, carries a running summary from chapter to chapter so the last one stays consistent with the first, designs a cover, and typesets everything into files you can publish — a reading PDF, a KDP print interior, EPUB and Word. One sentence in, a finished book out, with the price shown before you start.

A.3How long does a book take?

The outline appears in about a minute. A short lead magnet is usually finished in a few minutes and a full how-to guide in roughly ten to twenty; a novel takes longer. Keep the page open while it writes — if you step away, it picks up exactly where it stopped when you come back, and nothing is charged twice.

A.4Is the writing good enough to publish?

It is a strong, complete first draft: structured, consistent from the first chapter to the last, and typeset like a real book. Treat it the way a publisher treats any manuscript — read it, check facts and figures, and edit anything that is not in your voice before you publish. AI can state wrong facts confidently.

A.5Can I publish on Amazon KDP?

Yes. The print export is a 6 × 9 inch interior with KDP-compliant margins, a contents page with real page numbers, and every chapter opening on a right-hand page. Coloring books export as 8.5 × 11 inch interiors with bleed. Amazon asks you to disclose AI-generated content when you publish, and you are responsible for the rights and accuracy of what you upload.

A.6What can I download?

A typeset PDF for reading, a PDF print interior, an EPUB for e-readers and Apple Books, and a Word document (DOCX) you can edit anywhere. Downloads are part of the paid plans; on the free plan you can read your finished book in the app.

A.7Can I choose how my book looks?

Yes. There are over 500 book designs across 35 genres, each a matched cover and interior — typefaces, chapter openings, drop caps, ornaments and colours — and switching designs is free at any time. Every plan includes designs (10 on Free, 60 on Starter, 150 on Writer, 300 on Author, all of them on Series and up). Paid plans can customise fonts, colours and the cover layout and drag the type; Writer and up can add their own cover, images and logo. An AI illustration is optional and costs 5 credits.

A.8What does a credit buy?

Books are priced by length — one credit for every 800 words written — and paid in stages, each only after you approve it: the summary and plan first (2 credits per 20 chapters), then chapter one, then the rest. Typical standard-length books: Lead Magnet: about 6 credits; How-To Guide: about 22 credits; Research Report: about 22 credits; Interactive Workbook: about 18 credits; Online Course: about 26 credits; Fiction Novel: about 62 credits; Coloring book: 3 credits a page plus 4 (a 24-page book is 76); A new cover: 5 credits. Changing the plan or a chapter in plain English costs what writing that part costs. If anything fails, the credits for whatever was not written come back automatically.

A.9Can I change what it writes?

Yes. Rewrite any chapter you are not happy with, or generate a new cover, and the cost is shown first. The Word export is fully editable, so you can make every final change by hand.

A.10Which languages can it write in?

English, Hindi, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Arabic, Bengali and Tamil.

A.11How do plans and cancellation work?

Plans are monthly and add a fresh credit allowance each billing period. Unused credits roll over, up to two months’ worth. Upgrade any time and the new plan starts at once; downgrades start at your next renewal. Cancel any time from your billing page — your plan stays active until the end of the period you paid for, and the credits you have left stay yours, with your books intact.

A.12Is my work private?

Your books are stored in private cloud storage that is never publicly readable. Every download is a signed link that expires within minutes, all traffic is encrypted, and only your account can open your books.

Afterword

The book you keep meaning to write is one sentence away.

Write it down. By the time you have made a cup of tea, it will have an outline.
